Hospital — 1. m. Establecimiento destinado al diagnóstico y tratamiento de enfermos, donde se practican también la investigación y la enseñanza. 2. m. Casa que sirve para recoger pobres y peregrinos por tiempo limitado. (1. Establishment for diagnosis and treatment of the ill, as well as medical research and education. 2. Temporary shelter for poor people and pilgrims.)
Hospitalero, ra — m. y f. Persona encargada del cuidado de un hospital. (Person in charge of a hospital)
Hospital — 1242, “shelter for the needy,” from O.Fr. hospital “hostel,” from L.L. hospitale “guest-house, inn,” neut. of L. adj. hospitalis “of a guest or host,” from hospes (gen. hospitis); see host (1). Later “charitable institution to house and maintain the needy” (1418); sense of “institution for sick people” is first recorded 1549.
Host — “person who receives guests,” c.1290, from O.Fr. hoste “guest, host” (12c.), from L. hospitem (nom. hospes) “guest, host,” lit. “lord of strangers,” from PIE *ghostis- “stranger” (cf. O.C.S. gospodi “lord, master,” Goth. gasts, O.E. gæst “guest”).
